Hellweather privacy policy

Hellweather is made by Nebula Colors, a small family studio. This policy explains what the app does with your information. The short version: we use your location only to show your forecast, we have no accounts, no ads, no analytics and no trackers, and we never sell or share anything about you.

What the app uses, and why

Your location. If you allow it, the app reads your phone's approximate location to show the weather where you are; it never asks for precise location. Before anything leaves your phone, the coordinates are also rounded to about 1 km (two decimal places). The rounded coordinates are sent to the weather service below to get your forecast. If you'd rather not share your location, you can choose a city by name instead.

Place names. To show the name of your town, and to find a city you search for, the app uses your phone's built-in geocoding service: Google's on Android and Apple's on iOS. That service receives the coordinates or the text you typed. Their own privacy policies apply to it. If that service can't answer, the app searches a list of towns stored on your phone, and nothing is sent.

Your settings and last forecast (units, your places and the most recent forecast) are stored only on your phone, so the app can show your weather offline. Deleting the app deletes them.

Who else receives data

  • MET Norway (the Norwegian Meteorological Institute, api.met.no) provides the forecast. Each forecast request includes the rounded coordinates and, like any internet request, your IP address. MET Norway's terms and privacy statement are at https://api.met.no/doc/TermsOfService.
  • The US National Weather Service (api.weather.gov), for places in the United States: the same rounded coordinates, to fetch the chance of rain for the forecast and official severe-weather alerts. Its data is public, and it's a US government service.
  • Google or Apple, through your phone's geocoder, as described above. If you turn on severe-weather alerts, notifications are delivered by your phone's own system; we don't use a push service.

That's all. We don't run our own servers for the app, and we don't receive your location or any other personal information ourselves.

Severe-weather alerts

If you turn on alert notifications, the app checks the official alerts for your places in the background, about every half hour, and shows a notification for new severe warnings. It uses the places already saved in the app; it never asks for your location in the background. You can turn this off in Settings.

What we don't do

  • No account or sign-in.
  • No advertising and no advertising identifiers.
  • No analytics, crash-reporting or tracking software.
  • No selling, renting or sharing of personal data.
  • No background location. The app asks for location only while you're using it.

Children

The app doesn't knowingly collect personal information from anyone, including children.

Your choices

You can turn location access off at any time in your phone's settings and choose a city instead. Deleting the app removes everything it stored.

Changes

If this policy changes, we'll update the date above and describe the change in the app's release notes.
