Nebula Plant privacy policy

The short version

Your plants, photos and care history live on your phone. There's no sign-up, no ads, no tracking and no analytics. When you ask the app to name a plant, one small copy of that photo is sent to our server so an AI model can identify it. We don't keep that photo.

What stays on your phone

Everything you add to Nebula Plant: your plants and their nicknames, the rooms they live in, your photos, watering history and settings. It's stored in the app's private storage and never uploaded. Deleting the app deletes it.

What leaves your phone, and why

  • Plant photos you ask us to name. The app shrinks the photo to about 1,000 pixels and sends it to our identification service, which runs on Supabase (servers in Ohio, USA). The service passes it to OpenAI's API to identify the plant and returns the answer. We don't store the photo. OpenAI doesn't use API data to train its models and may keep it for up to 30 days to detect abuse, under its API data policy.
  • Reference photos. To show you what a suggested plant looks like, the app asks iNaturalist for a photo of that species. The request contains only the plant's scientific name, nothing about you or your photo.
  • An anonymous account ID. The first time you name a plant, the app creates a random, anonymous ID on our server. It isn't linked to your name, email, phone number or device identifiers. We use it only to count how many plants you name each day, so the free service stays fair and affordable.

What we don't collect

No name, email, phone number, contacts, location, advertising ID or browsing data. We don't sell or share data, and we don't use third-party analytics or advertising tools.

Camera, photos and notifications

The camera is used only when you snap a plant or scan the code in a Nebula Colors planter box. The photo library is opened only when you choose a photo. Care reminders are scheduled on your phone; no reminder data goes to a server.

Deleting your data

Go to Settings, then "Delete my data". This erases everything on your phone and deletes your anonymous ID and its usage counts from our server straight away. Uninstalling the app also erases everything on the phone; the anonymous ID and daily counts left on the server hold no personal information.

Children

Nebula Plant is for a general audience and isn't directed at children under 13. We don't knowingly collect personal information from anyone.

Changes

If this policy changes, we'll update the date above and describe the change in the app's release notes.
